Nifty new category, Mr Plague. I have some boss photos of local Canberra 60s punk bands. Is it possible to upload to this site, or do I have to link to some external host? I dunno this computer stuff too good.

that would be damn groovy. go to: imagefra.me/ press browse, find your image and upload it. once its uploaded you need scroll down the page to`Direct Link To Image` copy that link, then when your posting a message here you need to click the image tag: then paste the link inbetween the two ` ************ ` and thats it,easy peezy....oh it would help if the images are in jpeg format.

Thanks Plague, looks like it worked. The above pic is the Witness in 1966. I know exactly where this is, about 10 minutes away in Garema Place in the middle of Canberra City. Who knows, maybe I was toddling around there on the same day at the age of three.
It's cool that even a dump like this had at least 50 active garage bands going at any given time during 1965-66.
(And a certain Mr so-and-so, I would appreciate it if you don't steal this picture and claim it as your own.)

not really clued up on the Brighton 60s scene. The Beat Merchants were obvious local heroes(for me).this photo suggests the teens of the day thought otherwise judging by the looks on their faces! the sea-side venue pictured is `The Volks` which is still used for the odd northern soul all-dayer but sadly not for scorching beat bands of the day. The Penny Peeps i think were local, there must have been a handfull of hot bands that never made to record..on a much smaller scale than the US obviously. anyone else with local stories?

The Beat Merchants? All they had was a pretty face.... actually they were ugly (but wild) motherfuckers too.

It doesn't get any uglier (or wilder) than THESE fuckers:

That's the Throb, by the way.
So what everyone else got? Let's see em.
Oi Plague, weren't he original Mods vs Rockers fights in Brighton? That's a pretty rich "punk" history right there.

Ed Wool & The Nomads. Their tune " I Need Somebody " has been on a few garage comps. They opened for the Rolling Stones in 1965 in Syracuse, N.Y. I saw them play a number of times at school dances, weddings , clubs , etc. in the mid-sixties. They almost always played in suits & ties like the early Beatles. Fantastic garage band. Here is an interview with band member Mike Christie: www.famousinterview.ca/interviews/mike_christie.htm

re: the Throb photo. someone HAS to have fucked with picture, that guys eyes dripping down his face...
just did some random film extra work playing a `mod` in a totally unneccesary remake of the film Brighton Rock.theres a few mod/rocker battle scenes that are completely awfull...all these 40-something mods chanting `we are the mods` throwing fake rocks at Eastbourne Pier, where they filmed it.
best thing was, this old film extra in his 60`s who was given the part of an old man(obviously),took it upon himself to wander into the battle scenes shouting abuse at the rockers...turns out he was there in the original Brighton mod/rocker riots, and was still gagging for a bit of `argy bargy`.
by the way,the film is going to be shit.theres just too many flawed scenes.unless they have incredible post-production skills.saying that...Helen Mirren`s in it, and me ofcourse...

The Throb were just plain ugly, half of them were Dutch. Groovy about you being in that film, can't you have any say over the content of it? I'm quite sure you know 99% more about the period than the fuckers who are making it.
