I remember the Au Pairs, not real fondly but i remember....
I've had various comps but mostly stripped them of good tracks and then gotten rid of them. I know there was a mutidisc boxset i borrows that seemed to hit all the highlights without being dumb and it had a few surprises, probably a Rhino thing.

Chuck Warner's Messthetics series is pretty damn cool - go to www.hyped2death.com for further info. There is also 7" Up!: Singles Only UK 78 - 82 courtesy of the good folks at Germany's Crippled Dick Hot Wax label.

the messthetics series are all great if you like a lot of variety.can`t wait to here those new scottish and welsh releases. the comps above are inspired by Chuck`s endevours.he`s pretty commited to the making of these compilations considering he was busted for copyright infringement a while ago and had to pay a hefty amount. i found out recently he was a heavy psych and garage collecter before he started collecting ths post-punk/diy stuff.

This stuff isn't really my cup of tea. Could hardly get into the children of nuggets bands. There's a Rip It Up compilation cd I have which is a companion to the book I never read, but it's hardly in synch with the major players that better represent the genre because of the presence of bands like the B-52's, Devo, the Human League and Siouxsie & The Banshees. Probably wouldn't be suitable for the title of "good post-punk comps" if you're looking for a better overall tracklist that delivers more of the punk aspect.

It's always cool to see how bands started out and what they evolved into when their 2nd and third, etc. albums roll around. They either end up keeping their fanbase or leave people scratching their heads wondering what the hell happened to send them in a new direction. To me, it's not even fair to categorize a band like Devo that started with Are We Not Men and are most known for Whip It.
I appreciate the punk & post punk anthem makers, who have lots to say and get off their chest with lyrics & a darker level of angst to share. Most of the time that aspect keeps them on the radar. I like the improvisational & experimentation of sounds that come with this genre of music. Also like that you don't have to be on the top of any "greatest of" list, full of technical prowess on an instrument to gain attention because it's not really about that, it's more about what sparked the songs anyway. There will never be any lack of listeners, that's for sure & it's really cool when a band keeps their regional or local fans throughout the span of their entire career.
It's not like I dislike it completely or don't get it, it's just that it's not a type of music I enjoy listening to as much as what I do. I never have 70's punk or post-punk in heavy rotation, but now and then I get an urge to hear some & I do own some. Musically, it sounds nothing like the 60's stuff to me, but I will definitely agree that the idea of "punk" (and its definition) was always there early on parallel to what came before the groups mentioned in this discussion.
I'm not familiar with most of the bands on 'where to now' so I can't say if this is a disc I'd listen to regularly or not. Really like Voice of the Seven Woods, which is another band I can hardly label because they give you a bit of punk, indian flavor & even a slow ballad. Some others in this vein I like are Maximum Joy, Gang of Four, the Cramps, Pere Ubu & yeah, Wall of Voodoo (not too keen on their version of Ring of Fire though - why pick a cover instead of an original to include here?) which means I also like the Talking Heads, alot actually. Haven't heard the Units.
There's probably way more sub-genres this stuff could fall into, but I really can't stand putting stuff into all the buckets out there. I keep 2 for myself... like and don't like & get by talking about the mainstream genres & subs I'm actually familiar with.

i`d go with you on the classification and sub-catergorisation of music;its often way off the mark. its what fucks music up the ass in the end. John Lydon has a few interesting things to say about this...
i would however consider myself a garage nazi....
The Units are worth checking out. hopefully wheretonow3 will be downloadable soon.

I love this kind of stuff. I'm usually not into the more synthesizer oriented stuff, but who knows. My tastes change occasionally. I've been playing The Desperate Bicycles quite a bit recently after finding their stuff to download. Man, there's so much I want to hear and so little time and funding.

That "Shake Some Action" cover is hilarious. I'm trying to learn that one guitar right now. It's a fun one to play.

i've supported the nightingales in a previous band i was in ......they are fucking brilliant
when i was 15 i was heavily into this post-punk stuff aswell as shoegaze, drone rock and c86 , i was 15 at the tail end of britpop and kinda despised britpop so for any adolecent trying to find their feet in this world .....the comps and bands shown above are a good start . when i was 16 and discovered 13th floor elevators i became garage punk mad .......it's sort of like a disease .....once it's in you it can't get out .
john lydon calling himself a garage nazi is sort of laughable ...... as he now builds garage's as part of his housing development buisness ...... does anyone else think the sex pistols doing reformed gigs to sell out crowds is kind of pathetic???
