Mastering is bringing together all the essential sounds while minimizing unwanted hiss, pops and static, but not to create the "sound" of the song as intended by the artist. Many times people are disappointed when they see a band perform live, because someone created their sound in a studio. What I mean is, I may want the drums loud in a particular place in a song. I don't want someone inside a studio changing the song because that's what they like.
