No sir, they were more on the R&B side of the fence. You're welcome. OK -- now simply explain the difference between "soul" and "R&B" and I will be thanking YOU very much indeed. Look - yer a big boy. You should be able to do this by now. But I'll help you out this one time. Because I like you! So don't get your smartie pants on, bozo-boy. You just typ G. Then an O. Those round ones that looks like a donut. Then another O. Then G and an L. And end it with an E. Then go wild! *pat pat*

First the beer and then the bowl. To pee in and/or wear as a hat. Surely you jest, Lee. But if not, before you you Pee in the bowl, smoke it. Then listen to the Rascals. Of course they're not heavy, but the vocals and the music is good. Tom

If only you could tell me the next time a moment of clarity passes the station of your mind...
I'm sucking on a bottle (no not butthole UFO, that's another thing you got the wrong way around) so I'm not up for much conversation. I just silently agree with Wikipedia (Rhythm and blues (also known as R&B, R'n'B or RnB) is the name given to a wide-ranging genre of popular music created by African Americans in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The term was originally used by record companies to refer to recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular.[1] The term has subsequently had a number of shifts in meaning. Starting in the 1960s, after this style of music contributed to the development of "rock and roll", the term "R&B" became used - particularly by white groups — to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. By the 1970s, the term "rhythm and blues" was being used as a blanket term to describe soul and funk. Since the 1990s, the term "Contemporary R&B" is now mainly used to refer to a modern version of soul and funk-influenced pop music.)
Shit, now my dicks hard too... Damn it, GAWD - the strain on my pants' INSANE! ARGH!

OK, so how is "soul" different from your (i.e. Wikipedia's) definition of "R&B"?
Holy FUNK.

R&B - to me - is a bit more on the "light" side with some intentions to rock and to roll. Soul - to me - is often a bit more introspective.
But this surely must be a minefield.
And to stick my butt a bit more further out I'll do a "? & the Mysterians-by-numbers" and give my interpretation of what kind of style it is. And guys - I'm shooting from the hip here with my dog in the lap while I'm sippin coffee and I really should be doin something else.
I'll use the CD The Best Of ? & the Mysterians
I Need Somebody
Whup! This funky track is R&B. Its the bomp in the stomp that does it.
Stormy Monday
Geez - a god-awful electric blues with some moments of soul. I hate this track.
You're Telling Me Lies
What the hell is this? R&B? No. Soul? Nooo. Rock'n'roll? Nope. I'd need a tab of acid, some coke and a Margarita to tell you. It's an awesome funfair meltdown. Kicks Can's ass or any of those other monotonous kraut-rockers. Did I mention that it's a pretty obvious 19th Nervous Breakdown-clone?
Ten O'Clock
Swingin' track. Cool rock'n'roll, probably inspired by Mr. Diddley - with straight drums. Funky.
Set Aside
Useless piano-based blues.
Up Side
Did they get that bass-line from We Got To Get Out Of This Place? Hmm. Ok UFO - this one's soul. Up-tempo soul mind you, I'm aware that soul don't have to be slow to be soul.
"8" Teen
Way too modern (then) to be R&B. No this is another up-tempo soul-track. FUCK! Lee: 1 - UFO: 2. Don't Tease Me
Where are all the drugs when you need them? More insane funfair-rock'n'roll. So fuckin' great this is! Hypnotic.
Don't Break This Heart Of Mine
This is hysteric bip-bip-bip-bip R&B - imagine Big Mama Thornton singing this monster instead. NASTY! Lee: 2 - UFO: 2.
Why Me
Anyone rushing to write songs to make a whole LP? Pretty useless and pretty entertaining at the same time. Kinda like Real Cool Time by the Stooges
Midnight Hour
R&B - baby. See UFO, R&B is funkier, hungrier, hornier, grittier. Lee: 3 - UFO: 2.
96 Tears
AAAR and BEEE! Can't you hear it? Check out Aretha's, Jimmy Ruffin's or Big Maybelle's covers - they're doing a more soulish take on it. Even if Question Mark got soul in his voice - this is a super-tense R&B track. The song makes ya wanna dance, not listen to the singers emotions. Fuck it's good.
Eeech - no one reads this shit anyway. I win UFO - according to me. You're free to do your own take on this. Or not.

So a bowl is pot and not a potty? No, Lee, a bowl is not pot. You put pot in the bowl of a pipe. You've got to be jerking me around, here. So, I guess you can put whatever you want in a bowl. But pee is hard to light. Tom

We don't know american slang? But now I know why you guys get so excited about this whole superbowl-thing. I knew there had to be more there than that sorry-ass game you pass as football.

Ha Ha - What I find even funnier than that is all the names all you guys use to describe Rock And Roll. Now, that's a hoot.

Hell, we could just call it music! Or sound!
No. We can't. Because we don't like all rock'n'roll. I'm particular. I listen to music maybe 3-5 hours a day. I've done that for 30 years. I don't like to listen to crappy rock. I need it to be good. I'm even more of a nerd - I think it's cool to know when it was released so I can compare with other music from that year.

Thanks for the thesis regarding the "differences" between soul and R&B, Leedee. Now I know better.
Now, please explain the difference between jazz and bebop. That's been nagging at me for days now.

Hell, we could just call it music! Or sound! No. We can't. Because we don't like all rock'n'roll. Lee, I don't like all R-N-R either. And, I do understand the reason for all the genre/sub-genre titles. It's just that I find all that funny. I mean, even if I don't like a particular song, it's still R-N-R. Just shitty R-N-R. Tom
