Hell, we could just call it music! Or sound! No. We can't. Because we don't like all rock'n'roll. Lee, I don't like all R-N-R either. And, I do understand the reason for all the genre/sub-genre titles. It's just that I find all that funny. I mean, even if I don't like a particular song, it's still R-N-R. Just shitty R-N-R. Tom You're right Tom , how would one know you if they like or don't like a song if they don't listen to it? Labeling helps to an extent but ultimately I have to hear the music to decide.

I have to hear the music to decide. Checkmate, Man, thank you. Do you know how long it has taken to at least get someone on any of these boards to at least admit that it's all about the music. The band is incidental to the fact. Why do we insist on mucking everything up by throwing the band in the mix? No wonder people get off track when trying to discuss this issue.

The first four Rascals LP's are masterpieces, especially the second and the third. And Felix Cavaliere is one of the greatest singers ever.
To me, the difference between R&B and soul is that R&B deals with classic blues chords and soul is strictly a black music term which also includes stuff like Motown or Northern Soul which are far from blues.
But I might be wrong, and I don't give a pee about it.
Love to all of you.

Yep , and in this day and age it's much easier to hear at least a sample of the music to decide instead of going by someone else's labeling ( their idea of freakbeat might not be the same as yours). Labeling is mostly for collectors of extremely rare records that can't be heard in rare cases. Even at record shows you can bring a portable player to hear before you buy.

jeanpop,
How many sungs are you planning to put on the comp? Which ones do you have right now?

jeanpop, How many sungs are you planning to put on the comp? Which ones do you have right now? Tom 25 I think. But it won't be Rascals-focused after all, a good third of them will be some fine garage-soul.
